This union is inhabited by people of Hindu and Muslim communities. There are 3 markets in Bashikpur union. Among which Poddar Bazar is the largest market in the northern part of Laxmipur and there are also Nag Hat and Patwari Bazar.
RK Nag, the then Hindu zamindar of Nandigram in this union (after the Hindu-Muslim riots in 1948 at his house preached the message of non-violence as the ultimate religion, Mohanlal Karamchand Mahatma Gandhi spent some time in Chatkhil which is now known as Mahatma Gandhi Ashram. On top of that he established Nager Hat which is still known today as a traditional market of Bashikpur. The tyranny of the zamindar's pike pedestrians had reached such a stage that he had to be utterly humiliated by the boatman of the influential Chandranath Poddar of Birahimpur in Bashikpur, who was stranded at the naval port of Nag Hat. On the other hand, Muslims took to the streets led by Ghulam Charwar Miah, then a member of Pakistan's parliament, to protest against the ban on slaughtering cows at Nag Hat Hat. At one stage, the Hindu community following Chandra Nath Poddar and the Muslim community led by Golam Charwar Miah boycotted the Nag Hat and planned to set up a new Hat. Chandranath Poddar handed over 0.09 acres of land to the District Collector and gave him a place to set up a new hat. He named it Bashikpur Poddar Hat after him. Later, some Muslims objected to the existence of Poddar before the name of the market and renamed Poddar Bazar as Islamganj Bazar, but the market is known as Poddar Bazar today and Bashikpur Poddar Bazar.
